DiverseWerks - Capacity Building
CULTURAL COMPETENCY TRAINING
Issue:
To train Australian Red Cross staff and service partners in specific cultural and practice issues involved in working with asylum seekers.
Solution:
Diversewerks developed a customised training program in close collaboration with the Red Cross, which covered a range of cultural competence skill sets, including:
- A deeper knowledge of the experience of asylum seekers;
- An understanding of the social and political context of their time in Australia;
- Identifying necessary training in how to deal with day-to-day practice issues.
Results:
The successful national program has now been enhanced for more experienced practitioners. The Red Cross also retained DiverseWerks to facilitate and chair two national practitioners’ forums in 2013.
