Chinese New Year is no doubt a golden opportunity for a lot of retail businesses to cash in, but for Australia’s Department of Agriculture it is identified as a heightened risk target.

With a large volume of Chinese travelers coming to Australia to visit family and friends during the Chinese New Year, a strong culture of giving food as gifts puts Quarantine inspectors under huge pressure at the international airports. Cultural differences and language barriers have added complexity to the problem.

The Department of Agriculture has been conducting awareness campaigns for some years, but it takes a lot more than that to tackle this problem.
